And why, despite all, I still do what I do…
Dear friend,
Confessions are tough. Real tough. But, sometimes a confession can set the record straight, and I want to give credit where credit is due. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.
Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Jeff. I’ve seen you riding to your office and down the aisles of the grocery store on your Segway.” Well, I’m the taller one in the photo, not the little rock star.

Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. Let me tell you my story.
“I’m in high school at the time, and life is good. I’m training in Tae Kwon Do, and working hard at it. Then, suddenly, my health falls apart. My knees begin to hurt badly and start to lock up, and I’m also getting terrible migraine headaches. The headaches are so bad they often make me throw up. I have to lie down, shut off the lights, and just endure the pain. The medical doctors told me if I continued doing Tae Kwon Do, I’ll eventually need knee surgery. The say the headaches are just “normal.” All they can offer is pain pills. I decide against it. But there’s more…
Finally, my mom convinces me to give her doctor a try. This doctor does an exam, took some films, and gently ‘adjusts’ my spine and knees. The adjustment doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and soon my headaches are gone and my knees no longer lock up. Oh, did I mention that this doctor is a chiropractor? I do so well that I go on to get my Black Belt and compete at Madison Square Garden! Chiropractic works so well for me that I go to chiropractic school myself.”
The little boy in the photo is our son Enzo Phoenix. I adjusted him the moment the doctor handed him to me in the delivery room. I very gently made sure all his vertebrae were in the right place, reducing any nerve pressure. Now, he’s my happy, healthy, smiling little buddy. That’s why so many people bring their babies and children to me.
It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraine and knee problems. Also they come to me with their migraine headaches, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, poor posture, just to name a few.
Here’s what some of my patients had to say:
“Now, the terrible headaches and excruciating pain I had come to accept as a part of my life are gone!” (Tara D.)
“After suffering from chronic lower back pain for almost 20 years, it’s almost completely gone." (Michael R.)
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia to which my Neurologist said there was no cure. After only three visits I saw major improvement! After two short months of treatment, I am nearly symptom free!" (Adrian St. John)
Several times per day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!
Being a chiropractor can be tough, because there’s a host of so-called experts out there. They tell people a lot of things that are just plain ridiculous about my profession. But the studies speak for themselves, like the Virginia study that showed that over 90% of patients who saw a chiropractor were satisfied with their results. That’s just incredible!
Forty-eight million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits are reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. Many people find that they actually save money on their health care expenses by seeing a chiropractor. Another way to save…published, peer-review-ed research indicates that the immune system may be enhanced by chiropractic adjustments. The immune system is the system that helps the body fight colds, the flu, and many other sicknesses. Although all people respond differently to care, maybe you won’t be running off to the doctor as much once you start chiropractic. This is especially important if you are self-employed. And an entire week of care in my office may cost what you could pay for one visit elsewhere.
You Benefit from an Amazing Offer- Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article, you will receive my entire new patient exam for $37. That’s with x-rays, computerized nerve and muscle scan….the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $150 elsewhere. But, please call right away because this offer expires on May 31st, 2010, and I don’t want you to miss out. By the way, further care is very affordable and you’ll be happy to know that I have affordable family plans. You see I’m not trying to seduce you to come see me with this low start up fee, then to only make it up with high fees after that. Further care is very import-ant to consider when making your choice of doctor. High costs can add up very quickly. By law, this offer excludes Medicare/Medicaid patients.
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I was on the Dean’s List of Distinguished Students at State University of New York at Albany, a graduate of the Southern California University of Health Sciences, Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, and Certified from the International College of Applied Kinesiology. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know, and do Corrective Chiropractic Care. I just have that low fee to help more people who need care.
My assistants are Michelle, Rebecca, and Kristine, and they are all really great people. My wife Alicyn just has boundless energy and keeps everyone in the office on track and motivated. Our office is friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Health Solutions is located at 12080 Ventura Place in Studio City. P.S. When accompanied by the first, I am also offering the second family member this same consultation for only $10.
P.P.S. Your time is as valuable to you as mine is to me. That’s why I have a “no wait” policy. It is highly unusual to wait more than a few minutes in my office.
Meet Doctor Lee Nguyen
I first stumbled across Chiropractic via an information booth set up at a Career Fair at the University of Southern California, where I received my BA in Biological Science. It was the only booth I stopped at that day. I took a pamphlet and continued on my course with my future aimed at Medical School.I took a part-time job at USC doing research with a lab professor for recombinant DNA. He was trying to clone a gene therapy vector for cancer, which I found extremely interesting, and I began to open my mind to the idea of Grad School for research in Genetic Engineering. The work they did was important, but it struck me that the researchers had devoted the majority of their lives to the laboratory. It seemed their private life was overtaken by their professional life, and I didn’t get the sense that they really enjoyed life to its fullest potential. Med School and Grad School were both options, but my future was up in the air.
During my 4th year at USC, my father had a stroke. The right side of his face was paralyzed, and he lost half of his body weight. I took a semester off school and spent a month with him in the hospital. This was my first real look, as an outsider, into the life I thought I wanted. What I saw, was that the doctors and nurses were overworked, under appreciated, and their attitudes and actions reflected it immensely.
The most pressing issue was that my father was on massive amounts of medications after the stroke, but he wasn’t getting any better. The medical doctors succeeding in keeping him alive, but his overall quality of life was much, much worse. All I knew at the time was that my father’s health was declining quickly, and I had to get him well. Traditional Medicine was not working.
Searching for alternatives, I took him to an Acupuncturist as the first step. I had no experience with Chiropractic; all I knew was the information from that pamphlet, but that’s where I took him next. Acupuncture helped my father feel a bit better, but Chiropractic was what got him back up on his feet and moving about. When I returned to school, I knew my path.
I attended Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles where I received a B.S. in Human Biology, and a Doctorate of Chiropractic.
At Cleveland, I took anatomy, physiology, and pathology. I learned how to treat and cure disease, and how the human body itself works. I was exposed to the public, and learned how to treat real patients, in a low-income area from all walks of life, and I got to see the results. I felt inspired at Chiropractic School; my interests were lit, and I knew I was doing the right thing.
Now, I’d like to get adjusted everyday, but I make sure to get an adjustment once or twice a week, and a massage at least once a month. I exercise 3-5 times a week, mostly in the gym, and go running, hiking, and play tennis to maintain my health. I’ve made exercise a part of my lifestyle, not just something that I have to do.
I fully believe that when you keep a physically fit body, your immune system heightens to a state where it can fight off foreign substance like virus, bacteria, and allergens. And that's where Chiropractic comes in. It removes interference and allows your body to function at maximum capacity. Chiropractic in conjunction with rest, healthy food, and exercise go a long way to fight sickness and more importantly, to maintain overall wellness.

I look forward to treating you.
